Any sugeestions on a good but inexpensive, mellow, sipping Scotch?
I tried Cluny but it tasted like wet wood |

Wet wood? Too much peat in it to suit your palate probably. Scotch is a tricky subject, because it's a real acquired taste. Even for an inexperienced Scotch drinker, you'll find a lot of variation among the different kinds and brands based on the production process. "Peatiness" is a descriptive term for Scotch that'll you'll probably want to check into.
I'd suggest some single malt Scotches, such as The MacAllan, which I found to be quite enjoyable. However, some of the more common blended Scotch brands such as Johnnie Walker's Black Label might be a good starting point too. JW is inexpensive, and definitely popular.
Scotch is a whole drink industry by itself. Do a couple of Google searches to get you started, there are some good guides out there. |

Well... depends on your definition of inexpensive...
But Bruichladdich 10 Year (pronounced "Brook Laddie") is one of, if not THE best scotch I have ever had. Goes for around 50 buck though. |
