So, we made a couple of Canadian jokes this week in the DotW (you can read it here) and I got this email from an angry fellow citizen: | Quote: | Thank you for putting in doubt the knowledge of the Canadian electorate in electing our own free thinking government! Unfortunately, the rich, old white guy stereotype as well as Toronto and Ottawa as "downtown Canada" would only come from ignorant american media!
Yes we have 1/10th the population of the US but we rank consistently above you in all UN rankings for the best country to live in the world and until recently held the top spot for several years! Perhaps our rich, old, white
guys could teach yours a thing or two about public administration? | This is pretty much a carbon copy of my response to this person: | Quote: | ...we are a Canadian company run completely by Canadian staff here in BC. Our primary goal with our newsletter is humour, and we make just as many Canadian jokes as American jokes.
As a Canadian, I often run into deep resentment for anything American. The interesting part is that we inevitably get complaints whenever we make a joke involving dog-sleds or igloos. However, we have yet to receive a complaint when we make redneck Texan, inbred Southerner, or moron Republican jokes, despite 70% of our traffic being from the US. Canadians seem to have some sort of complex that requires them to defensively bash the United States whenever someone is critical of Canada. Not that there isn't a lot to bash them about, but it's the wrong response to criticism of us. We have been ruled by rich old white guys for a long time, that's just a fact. They might be better rich old white guys than the United States, but your immediate conclusion about "ignorant American media" gives me an ill feeling, despite a personal disrespect I harbor for all North American media. | Am I wrong? Do any other Canadians notice this? It's like as soon as you bring up something wrong with our country, someone immediately comes up with a reason why we're better off than the US. Do Americans notice this about us?
I'm not starting this thread to cause a flame war about US/Canada politics, I just want to hear other people's experiences. I guess I'm just tired of taking flak whenever we make a joke about my own country. |

Well... I have a few things to say about this.
1. To me it seems as if people love laughing at jokes that dont pertain perticularly to them. In this instance a joke about Canadians instead of Americans. The Canadian citizen flipped out at you all for writting such a funny drink of the week. Personally me being a Puerto Rican American (Also known as a Newyorican, dont ask?) doesnt bother myself if you make jokes relating to where I live. Why? Because its a JOKE. Ive had racial jokes shot at me. And hell I laugh. It seems to me people just need to take some chillaxitive(btw I invented that word )
2. Yes Ive noticed that a lot of Canadians seem very defensive when it comes to America. For crying outloud we're neighbors. I know most of you all dislike America. To be quite honest with you there are some things I dislike about America too. But you know what all of this has to stop eventually. And on top of that if you(the angry citizen) would've properly READ the DotW you would've read the fact that he said and I quote...
| Quote: |
....this week saw some Drinknation staff wield their mighty votes to bludgeon the ruling parties of Canada into submission....
|
In other words Drinknation staff are CANADIANS. Im sure the angry citizen would've probably thought twice about sending you hatemail regarding this subject if they would've read that.
3. I for one have always said and will continue to say that this is by far the best weekly email subscription that I have. The site mixes humor with relative subjects. As far as thats concerned if your not very happy with the way the email was presented to you then there is this small thing at the bottom of the email that tells you about unsubscribing. Please do so if you have issues. There is no reason to bash the people that work so hard to bring you a special drink each week, 52 times a year with something funny attached. Why don't you try doing it? I highly doubt you can.
4. Im not much into politics to be quite honest with you. I dislike many politicians responses to diffrent plans. As far as Im concerned it doesn't matter whom you vote into office. They're going to mess up.
There is no Canada is better then America. We both have our strengths and weakneses. Sure we suck in Hockey but why dont you try beating us in Basketball? Instead of bursting flame why not try to put a end to it? Do you really want your kids to grow up disliking another country? I sure hope not. Ah well now Im babbling again. Anywho.. Thats my chicken scratch to that post. Archvillain just do the damn thing and screw what other people say. Specially those that are incapable of taking a joke for what it truely is... A joke. |

Clearly this well-intentioned Canuck is not from the West Coast where we laugh at ourselves (or those around us) all day long. Probably s/he has to keep a fiery inferno blazing in her/his internal furnace because it's too cold this far North and they just don't build igloos like they used to. Word of advice: just because you're fiery hot with anger doesn't mean you have to stoke the furnace with that stick up your butt... |

| I don't understand people at all, its like they can make fun of everything else, but when it comes close to home its not allowed. Personally, I am from texas and I will joke about it and don't have a problem when people joke about it. But you always have those over sensitive people out there now a days. |

I actually thought "Downtown Canada" referring to Ottawa and Toronto was pretty funny.
And allow me to speak for many other Canadians by saying we all enjoy a good joke.
I still think someone's on the naughty list and getting lumps of coal this Christmas! ;o) |
