Good question...
A john collins is made with Whiskey and lime juice, while the more popular Tom Collins is made with Gin and Sour mix. Both take a bit of sugar and soda.

actually making a drink like a tom collins with sour mix and sugar defeats the point, as sour mix is really just lemon juice and sugar syrup - oh, and every bartender worth his salt would mix w(h)iskey with lemon juice rather than lime
