I am currently finishing up my marine corps enlistment and i want to get into bartending as soon as i get back home (St. Louis) I plan on going to a bartending academy but i don't want to go into bartending academy clueless can anyone suggest the best way to start learning the ins and outs?

Buy a book. Read it inside out. Thats what I did. I mean heck Im just bartending EVERY so often but I havent had anyone complain about my drinks. And I've never been to bartending school.

Yeah I'd agree with Billa. Make sure you have a lot of the classics down pat, and you know some of the basic highballs. That will pretty much cover 95% of anything you'll ever be asked for.

I went to bartending school.. I must say it was diffently a waste of money!! But then again in help me get my foot in the door.. I'm a full time bartender mon-fri so I guess I can't complain. Smile I have heard that most places don't really like to hire people that went to bartending school because they teach you bad habbits.. So just learn all the recipes you can, the glasswear, and practice pouring.. Razz

treat your regulars as family, newbies as guests, ask when unsure...buy a round..they willl be back...treat others as you would want to be treated...works for me, big tips...return customers..friends..
