Rum, anejo

Glossary:

Añejo rums come in a variety of forms, but the common factor is that they have been specially aged ("añejo" is an old Spanish word for aged). Añejo rums are generally amber or golden in colour, aged in oak barrels, and often crafted from a blend of other rums.

Barrel ages of añejo rums range anywhere from 3 to 12 or more years. Golden colour and smooth finish can make añejo rum an excellent sipping rum.

Brands and Variations of Anejo rum

Bacardi

Flor de Caña[home page]

Flor de Caña, or "Flower of the Cane", is an añejo rum originally produced in Nicaragua beginning in 1937. The distribution company has since opened another distillery in Honduras.

Flor de Caña makes several white and dark rums, ranging in age from 4 to 18 years. Many of these rums have received high honors over the years and won numerous awards.

Havana Club[home page]

Havana Club is a brand of añejo rum made in Santa Cruz del Norte, Cuba. It was established in 1878 by the Arechabala family and operated by them until 1959, when the distillery was nationalized by the Cuban government after the Cuban Revolution. The Cuban government still produces Havana Club rum through a joint venture with Pernod Ricard, called Havana Club International.

The Arechabala family left for Spain, then to the US, where they subsequently sold the family recipe to Bacardi. The Bacardi rum utilizes a pre-1960's recipe, which differs from the brand still produced in Cuba. The Cuban rum is unavailable in the United States due to the embargo on Cuban products.

Havana Club añejo rums are all blends of carefully selected premium rums, and aged in oak casks.
